BUNDLE: The Commonplace Guides | Family Rules, Benediction Table, Liturgia, The Way of the Will

$49.00

The complete guide bundle:

1. FAMILY RULES

Have you caught some of our family rules peppered into different podcast episodes? What started as simple, helpful phrases in our home eventually morphed into a full framework for how Kerns think, love, and do. These ten phrases remind our family how we pursue truth, goodness, and beauty in the everyday moments, and hold us accountable to what God calls good.

This 10-page resource includes:

  • The philosophical foundation for regula as a means by which we can pursue truth, goodness, and beauty

  • How to use Mason’s instruments of education as a framework for family rules

  • Our complete list of family rules, including memory verses and focused talking points for young children

  • Helpful notes on creating and implementing your family rules

  • A template to use in creating your own rules (requires free Canva account)

2. BENEDICTION TABLE

We started taking tea along with picture books and music in the afternoons when my oldest was eighteen months. In between naps and chores, we'd pause for fellowship and beauty, for refreshment and jollification. We've added more children and beauty to our time since then, but the roots remain the same: we pilgrims progress towards the Celestial City with all our senses and with each other. This is how our Benediction Table came to be, and this guide will serve as a philosophical and practical help as you launch your own practice of pursuing truth, goodness, and beauty with your children.

This 15-page resource includes:

  • The philosophical foundation for regularly pursuing truth, goodness, and beauty in the early years

  • A “Month of Feasting” calendar including a family rule, Scripture reading, memory work, read aloud, and more

  • A breakdown of what we include in our Benediction Table and how we incorporate these rhythms into other parts of our day

  • Troubleshooting tips and FAQs for beginning this in the early years

3. LITURGIA

For many, it’s motherhood that shows us our need for better. The weight of the role and the responsibility of introducing someone to God’s world calls a heart to order. We’re suddenly aware our loves, thoughts, and actions can form us towards or away from God. We realize the same is true for the children in our care. Figuring out how to live, though, is not so clear. How is one to learn better habits, better ideas, and better loves? And with children in tow?

When I realized I didn’t love the right things in the right way—that ordo amoris—I wasn’t sure where to look for advice. Instagram and mom blogs had plenty to affiliate link but nothing that seemed to last beyond the next post. Google gave me endless advice on how to love myself first but not how to better love. Christian circles shied away from definitive statements about practices or ideals that might smell of legalism. I wanted to bring truth, goodness, and beauty into my home in a formative way but it seemed like a far-off dream.

Until I came back to liturgy.

This 13-page resource includes:

  • Foundational definitions and explanations of liturgy, theological liturgy, and commonplace liturgy

  • Overview of the historic church calendar, including colors, traditions, and summaries of each season and how the calendar works as a whole

  • A philosophical and practical breakdown of how to use Mason’s instruments of education—atmosphere, discipline, and life—to point to God’s truths in the home by engaging all five senses to form minds, imaginations, and hearts with a vision of 'the good life'

4. THE WAY OF THE WILL

I'll be the first to acknowledge that despite my best efforts, intentions, and hopes, sometimes my entire house runs off course. The atmosphere, habits, and ideas around and in my family are far from our ideals, far from the path of truth, goodness, and beauty. In those seasons, I've wondered, "Can we ever get back on track?"

And the answer has always been yes.

The ‘turnabout’ towards goodness is about teaching our children to live. Not to walk around in the world like shadows, enslaved to their feelings or passions or selves, but to live and move and have their being in Christ. It's about falling in step with the natural inheritance of our sacramental world, to accept the invitation into God's love at every turn—in home life, habits, and education.

This 18-page resource includes:

  • A philosophical and practical breakdown of each “instrument” (atmosphere, discipline, and life) as it pertains to the way of the will. You’ll be equipped to understand the what, why, and how of strengthening a will without manipulating a child.

  • Four case studies to show how the same ideal or habit may be taught and supported to different “types” of children using the same principles in different ways

  • Explanation of outward behavior, heart issues, right motivation, and potential warnings

  • Troubleshooting tips and tricks on some of the most common struggles in the early years

Due to the nature of digital downloads, refunds are not given.
